Week 13 Win or Die Picks; Dils' National Championship Matchup

Before we get to the picks and pick distribution for week 13, I want to go on record as saying this is further proof that we need a freaking playoff system in college football. I mean what is so hard about this? There would be more money to be made for the schools and the NCAA, the fans would be happy, and more teams would have a chance at the National title, which would be decided on the field, where it should be. You can certainly make arguments for Florida and Michigan that have merit, and even Boise State and Louisville have an argument, even though most people will not listen to them. And only one team gets to play Ohio State. How is it that these decision makers are so dumb to screw this up for so long? And do not say the season is too long for the student athletes. Puh-lease.

Based on the system and how screwed up it is, and based on the fact that we can only pick one team to play the Buckeyes, I would pick Florida. Bottom line is that, while both teams are deserving, Michigan had their chance at Ohio State and lost. In addition, Florida is the champion of the best overall conference while Michigan did not win theirs. Florida has played a tougher schedule. Florida deserves it more than Michigan. We will see what happens later today.

Speaking of college football, my bowl pool wilkl be sent out tomorrow. If you want the information on it and do not get an email from me, send me an email and I will get it out to you.

You do realize that because Florida deserves to be in means that Michigan will be the team chosen. Kinda like when OU played USC - OU lost the Big 12, but still played for the national championship. Shouldn't that be a requirement?

So, we've had this system for what - 7 years? And so far it has been controversy-free twice?

lots of $ to be made during Bowl Season Ari. football, like horse racing, exists because of gambling.

Two questions for you on the subject of the college football national championship. 1. Who would've been ranked # 3 and 4 had USC won the game? Would Florida have jumped UM? 2. The BCS rankings are designed to rank the 25 best teams in the country. As everyone pretty much agrees, both Florida and Michigan's credentials were clearly very similar. I'm sure you have seen that the OSU-Florida line is 8.5. Michigan's line at OSU was 7.5 and they only lost by 3. What do you think the UM-OSU BCS game line would be? If it's less than Florida (which it wld probably be by about 3-4 pts), then don't you think the bookies/market is telling you that Michigan is a better team and therefore more "deserving"? And yes, I am very biased and very bitter.

Couple comments on that. 1. The computer polls which incorporate strength of schedule had Florida and UM tied. Florida played 4 teams ranked in the final Top 25 (#4, 9, 12 and 17)--the final being Arkansas in the 13th game SEC Final which doesn't exist for the Big 10. Michigan played 3 teams ranked in the final Top 25 (#1, #7 and #11). SEC finished 1-3 agst non-SEC BCS conferences while the Big 10 finished 2-4. Their one common opponent was Vanderbilt where Florida struggled but won 25-19 (at Vandy) while Michigan won 27-7 (at home). The rest of the schedules were pretty similar. Both conferences had teams that underperformed this yr (Iowa, Penn State, Georgia, Alabama). As for the question the point that Michigan "had their chance" already against OSU--since when is that a BCS criteria? So by that logic, Florida makes it if OSU is #1, but Michigan would make it if Auburn was #1? What if Texas won the Big 12? Would they have not been considered since they "already had their chance" against OSU in the 2nd game of the season? What if Duke lost 3 games to UNC in the hoops regular season? Should they not be allowed to face UNC in the Finals? What about 1996 college football? Why was it ok for Florida to have a rematch (after losing to FSU) in the national championship then, but not ok for UM-OSU this yr? Since when are rematches bad? Yeah, I'd hate to see the Patriots-Colts in the NFL playoffs this yr. Frazier-Ali really sucked the 2nd time around too. The system sucks and they should go to a +1 immediately. That being said, the arguements for picking Florida don't hold. The BCS was designed to pick the Top 2 teams, not the matchup that everyone wants as long as the teams didn't play already and are from a different conference.
