Baseball Fever, Catch It, NCAA and NFL Picks, and Week 4 Win or Die Picks

I want to believe. They have earned my belief with their play on the field, their close to 50 come from behind wins (leading the majors), and their erasing a 7 game deficit in the last two weeks. But I just cannot get past the fact that we are in Philadelphia, the city that last won a championship one score and four years ago, with a baseball team that has been tantalizingly close several times this decade only to fall agonizingly short every single time. So, despite the Met fans' utter panic right about now, I am not at all confident that this 2007 Phillies team will be playing into next week. I am hopeful. I am enthusiastic. And I will be watching every last pitch. But I am definitely not singing!

This is shaping up as the most exciting weekend in baseball in a while, with exactly ZERO playoff spots secured in the National League with three games to go. You have teams that are on fire (Phillies, Padres, and the 11-in-a-freaking-row Colorado Rockies), teams that are ice cold (Mets, Cubs (swept by Florida), and sort of the D-backs, after all anyone that loses a series to Pittsburgh should automatically be called cold), and one team that seems to have no idea what to do right abot now (Milwaukee; ummm, 5 errors in a must win game last night guys?). Sunday may be so exciting that we actually mix in some baseball with the NFL, a rarity for a Sunday. So let the games begin....

Now many of you are probably thinking I should cancel my weekly pick section, but I disagree. I am due to get red hot baby! And you can be a part of it. Unless you think this weill contionue, in which case, play against me. Here we go for this week:

NCAA (Last Week: 1-4; Season, 2-13 (13.3%, which is hard to do)):
  • South Florida (+7) vs. West Virginia. FRIDAY NIGHT GAME. This team is good. The country, at least those not watching baseball, finds out how good. I say very.
  • Duke (+24) at Miami. The Devils almost won this game last year, and they are better this year.
  • North Carolina (+18.5) at Va Tech. Va. Tech has not looked right all year.
  • Indiana (+11) at Iowa. Indiana is better than they looked last week, Iowa is not as good.
  • Miami (OH) +1 vs. Syracuse. See Iowa above.
  • Cal (+6.5) at Oregon. Outzen stadium is very tough place to play, but Cal at least keeps it close.
  • Alabama (+2) at Florida St (in Jacksonville). Bama will bounce back after a tough loss to Georgia last week. FSU is not very god as long as Derew Weatherford is leading them.
  • Penn St (-3) at Illinois. I couldn't take all underdogs
  • Notre Dame (+22.5) at Purdue. Too many points in a rivalry game, I think....

NFL (Last week: 3-3 (with one push), Season: 7-10, 41.2%)

  • Atlanta (+3) vs. Houston. The Texans are missing their best weapon, Atlanta has to win one sometime
  • Detroit (+3) vs. Chicago. If they have any pride after last week. Plus, Brian Griese is no big upgrade over Rex.
  • Minnesota (+2) vs. Green Bay. This Packer team is just not good enough to be laying points on the road, and Brett Favre does not play well at the Metrodome.
  • Buffalo (+3.5) vs. New York Jets. Sorry Stitz. Just not feelin' it this weekend. (Note: I have to be honest; I had no earthly idea Losman was out and they were starting a rookie QB this week. Which I guess is evidence that a) I have no idea what I'm talking about and b) follow me at your own peril. SO SCRAP THE GAME FOR RECORD PURPOSES.)
  • Arizona (+5.5) vs. Pittsburgh. Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm know enough the Steelers' personnel to keep this one close.
  • Cincinnati (+7.5) vs. New England. They just might win this one outright. I'm serious.

Win or Die Week 3 Picks:

This is either going to be a week in which a ton of people keel over or almost nobody, with 79% of the picks on San Diego or Dallas.....

National League Scramble, Yankees, Women's World Cup Culprit

I think I will focus the discussion on Larry Craig's stance on stem cell research. That should be adequate to get a full blown war going between Ari and Grossy. Good times....

The Phillies got a much needed win last night, beating Tim Hudson and the Braves 5-2. Ryan Howard, who according to some is vastly overrated, opened the scoring with an RBI single, raising his batting average with two outs and runners in scoring position to .368. Great baserunning by Chase Utley helped cause an error from Chipper Jones that meant 3 runs, and then the Phils rode their best pitching performance in a while from Kyle Lohse to an uneventful (for a change) 5-2 win at CBP. I must admit Grossy was right. He was excited by the Lohse signing and I poo-poo'd it at the time, but Lohse has been strong with the exception of his last start at Washington.

Of course, San Diego and Colorado both won last night, keeping the Phillies and Rockies tied, a game behind the Padres in the wild card chase. Interestingly, Arizona is now only 2 ahead of the Rockies and Phillies, and they play Colorado this weekend in Denver. The Mets continue to struggle and are now only 1 ahead of the Phillies. Bottom line. 2 games separate 5 teams, 3 of which will go to the playoffs. What happens if all 5 have the same record at the end of the year? They will need a week to figure out what three advance!!!

Tonight, the Phils will face Smoltz and send Kyle Kendrick to the mound. Kendrick is 6-1 at home this season, and Smoltz does not particularly like CBP, so who knows....The Mets send Pedro to the hill against St. Louis and Joel Pineiro in a make up game, San Diego sends Cassel against Gallardo to open a tough four game series against the still breathing Brewers, Arizona gets to end their skid with defending Cy Young winner Brandon Webb against an 0-6 Van Bsdukfhjkagfa, and not that it matters since the Dodgers have seemingly left early for spring break, but Colorado goes for 11 straight at LA.

In the American League, congratulations to the New York Yankees, who made it to the playoffs for the 13th straight time (would be 14 as they had best record in AL in '94 when strike hit). No matter what payroll arguments you have, that is a simply incredible feat. To put it in a way that Phillies fans can understand, the Yankees have been to the playoffs every single year since the Phillies last went in '93. Remarkable.

Looks like just about a lock that the playoffs will open next week with the Yankees at Cleveland and the Angels at Boston. The Tribe is 0-6 against New York this year. However, the Yankees did not face Sabathia this year and will face him twice, possibly both times in Cleveland. Playoffs should be exciting to say the least.....

In an example of crappy coaching and overthinking the situation, the US Women's Soccer team got whacked by Brasilia 4-0 today when their coach made a goalie switch. Hope Solo has been the exclusive goalie for the U.S., has played well, and led the team to the semi finals. The coach then made the switch because Brianna Scurry is 12-0 lifetime against Brazil, and he liked the match up better. Is Charlie Manual the coach of this team (couldn't resist). This is a ludicrous decision, and that coach clearly should not be coaching our National team.

Phillies, Mike Winters, Michael Vick, and not so Sexy Rexy

The Phillies are so lovable some times and so depressing and frustrating others. They let a great opportunity in the division slip away, as Washington beat the Mets for the second straight night. But the Phillies wasted home runs from J-Roll, Howard, Utley and Werth and blew a 5-5 lead to lose 10-6. Meanwhile, San Diego scored 4 in the 9th and Colorado overcame a 5-4 deficit on the road to both gain a game on the Fightins'. The Phillies now have to try to beat Hudson and Smoltz the next two nights. As usual, a late season flurry following a bad start left the Philberts with remarkably little room for error (i.e., none) and they may end up just short of the promised land YET AGAIN.

Their late season surge only to end up just short reminds of of my friend Edwin McCain, who sings "Misguided roses they bloom in October, emerging triumphant in time for the season's first....SNOW."

MLB suspended Mike Winters, the despicable ump who baited Milton Bradley, for the rest of the regular season. I am assuming the investigation is ongoing and they will reserve the right to increase the suspension. I reiterate my suggestion that he be suspended without pay until Bradley is able to return to the playing field. Bradley should also be able to go after him financially if this injury costs him money as he is a free agent this offseason. Speaking of idiots....

Hey, Michael Vick. Here's a thought. You have dug yourself a hole so deep you may never come out, a good idea may be to stay on your best behavior. Testing positive for marijuana is really not a good idea. What a buffoon.

The Bears have evidently benched Sexy Rexy in favor of Brian Griese. In my opinion this likely signifies the end of the Grossman era in Chicago as it will be tough to turn the reigns back to him after this type of benching. In my opinion, Griese is not a long term fix as he has proven in the past, having been cut by Denver, Miami, and Tampa Bay this decade. That means that the Bears, who have a championship caliber team in many areas, are needing to start over in 23008 at the QB position. If I were Brian Urlacher or a member of that defense, I would be very unhappy with these developments. To me, it shows that Jerry Angelo is not equipped to build a championship team, and should be replaced as the GM. Ummm, Jerry, you put all the pieces together except the most important one....putz.

I will be back tomorrow. Let's hope the Phils find a way to get to Tim Hudson tonight and they get a better outing from Kyle Lohse than he gave them in his last start.

Week 3 Column: Dils Second Chance Pool, Baseball's Last Week, NFL Week 3, Other Commenmtary

First, for anyone interested in the Dils Win or Die Second Chance pool, click here to sign up and find rules. It starts this week. You need to sign up and make pick for Week 4 before Sunday at noon.

We gotta start with baseball today. We are in the last .2 miles of the marathon that is the MLB season. While the four American League teams have all but been decided, the round 1 matchups are still very much up in the air. And in the National League, the tension is palpable.

As the Phillies come off an 8-2 road trip, they find themselves tied for the Wild Card lead with the Padres, a game up on the surging Colorado Rockies who have won 8 straight. In the Phillies quest for the playoffs, it turns out that their most valuable player is not Chase Utley, J-Roll, Ryan Howard or even a resurgent bullpen. In actuality, it may be Milton Bradley, who single handedly took 2/3 of San Diego's outfield off the field for the remainder of at least the regular season. First, he stepped on Mike Cameron's thumb, damaging a ligament, then tore his own ACL when his manager pulled him away from a battle royale with a piece of garbage umpire Mike Winters, who in my opinion should be suspended for as long as it takes Bradley to return to the lineup. It's bad enough umpires determine the outcomes of games too often with bad calls (admittedly less in baseball than other sports, but it still happens), but now they are taunting players on the field. Mike Winters is worse than Joey Crawford if you ask me.

As for the Padres, they replaced a hole by acquiring Jason Lane, a guy who has had a horrid year but who hit 26 home runs two years ago, from Houston. Is it just me or does baseball at some point need to implement a trading deadline. It just seems silly that someone can pass through waivers and be traded to another team for a week to help make the playoffs.

The Phillies find themselves tied for the wild card with 6 games to play. Their 6 games are at home, where they are 43-32. The Pads have SF and Milwaukee on the road (SF for 2, Milwaukee for 4), while Colorado has 3 at LA (where they face Penny and Lowe the next two days) and three at home against Arizona. No excuses. The Phillies have the inside track, they have been in this exact situation in the last several years, and it is time to step up and take this spot. 87 year old Jamie Moyer makes a huge start tonight against the pesky Braves who have won 7 of 8. The bullpen is rested with a day off yesterday. It is time to win. No excuses. My 4 year old demands it.

An interesting twist: if the Phillies and Mets tie for the division and both get in the playoffs, the Phillies are the winner as they won the season series. If they tie and do not both get in, they play a one game playoff in Philadelphia. If the Phils tie with anyone for the wild card (SD, Colorado, Milwaukee), they play a one game playoff on the road.

In the American League, the Yankees, Red Sox, Indians, and Angels will all be in the playoffs. The Indians right now have a half game lead on the Angels and a one game lead on the Sox, with the Yankees three back. In the careful what you wish for you just might get it category, the winner of the best record in the AL (if it is the Angels or Indians) will likely get the Bombers in the division series next week. The Yankees, besides having the most talent, have played the best ball in the second half of the year. The only question is whether they can beat a good team on the road, which they have not consistently done all year.

In my opinion, Cleveland or the Angels would be better off finishing second, and playing a fading Red Sox team that, in addition to momentum working against it, has less quality pitching (both starting and bullpen) than any of the other teams in the playoffs.

I look forward to watching the dynamic landscape mature over the next few days.....

As for football.....

The Birds are back, baby! Nothing like a 56-point offensive output to make you feel better about your now 1-2 football team. Now the question is can they sustain strong play as they play the next two on the road in the Meadowlands (Giants then Jets) and then home against the Bears. One negative on the Birds, and this really ticked me off. When are the Eagle fans going to realize that Donovan McNabb is the best quarterback in the history of the franchise and we will ALL be sorry when he is gone. I was amazed and disgusted at the beginning of the game when the offensive players were introduced and McNabb was lustily booed. I expected it after the first three-and-out, but before the game? That is a disgrace (the only acceptable excuse is if they were booing the uniforms, which were hideous). They introduced the all-time Eagles team during halftime. The thing I noticed most is that the Eagles did not have very many good players before the Buddy Ryan era started. The time between the 1960 championship and the Buddy teams of the late 80's were pretty much represented by Harold Carmichael.....

As bad as the Birds were in their first two games, the Saints have been worst in their first three games. The look positively awful, and there are no signs that they are coming out of it. If they can't win on Monday Night in a must win game against a decent but not yet great team, it is going to be a long season (sounds like what I said about the Birds last week, but they won 56-21 baby!). And they lost Deuce McAllister for the season, and Reggie Bush looks like he is not going to be a very good feature back (maybe the Texans were right to select Mario Williams #1 after all, although they could have taken hometown kid Vince Young and not had to trade for Matt Schaub).

I am standing by my opinion that Green Bay is not a very good undefeated team. After starting 3-0 and playing in a so-so division, they may well make the playoffs, but I cannot see them doing any damage at all once they get there.

Is anymore evidence needed that Norv Turner SUCKS as a head coach. As much as I think Marty Schottenheimer stinks in the playoffs, as supported by his record, he did take this team to a 14-2 record last year. They have so much talent. And they are a bad 1-2 right now. A.J. Smith (is that the general manager's name?) should be fired immediately for firing a head coach that led his team to a 14-2 record because of a personal vendetta. Especially when they lost both coordinators. Ludicrous.

Question, if the Chargers owner did what I suggest and fired AJ Smith and Norv Turner, and replaced them with Stitzer as their coach and general manager (there would be no relocation expenses!), who would Stitzer root for if the Chargers and Jets met up?

How about Lane Kiffin pulling a trick out of the Mike Shanahan bag and winning week 3 the same EXACT way he lost week 2. If nothing else, he is a fast learner.

Speaking of Denver, they look awful, as they could easily be 0-3 instead of 2-1. Is Jay Cutler not ready for Prime Time? I guess we will find out.

What are the odds in Vegas that New England and Indy play in the AFC Championship game, -8000? These two teams appear to be leaps and bounds ahead of everyone in the early going. Unless Pittsburgh proves me wrong....

Is there any worse ad campaign running right now than the stupid Wendy's campaign where guys run around wearing these red wigs with pigtails. Terrible.

I know this blog focuses mostly on sports and tries to steer clear of politics, but how can the U.S. allow this despicable criminal from Iran enter this country and speak at the UN and at Columbia University. This man has said that Israel should be wiped off the face of the Earth and that the Holocaust never actually happened. So we let him come here and speak to our college kids with impressionable minds? Are we insane. George Bush, as President, should never allow this to happen. This man is a terrorist and an enemy of our country and should have been arrested and detained the second he set foot on our soil. I am ashamed that we would allow this to happen.

Back with more quick updates all week....

Happy New Year, Phillies Push Continues, Donovan McNabb, Ed Wade, and NCAA and NFL Picks

First of all, to all those celebrating, I wish you a very Happy New Year and an easy fast.

Evidently, the San Diego Padres will never lose another game. Something that all Met and Phillies fans can agree on is that we pretty much despise the Padres at this point. They are even getting some wins from Justin "I Suck" Germano, who has terrible stuff and was cut by the Phils this spring. The Phillies have won 6 of their last 7 (all on the road), and have LOST A GAME in the wild card standings. Just a disgrace. Also, thanks to J. Patrick Lashinsky's Pittsburgh Pirates for leaving early on their extended winter golf vacation and not showing up in their four game sweep at the hands of the Pads. I guess at this point the Phillies best bet is to hope the Mets continue to resemble the 1964 Phillies and complete their collapse. While the Phils have won 6 of 7, the Mets have lost 6 of 7 to allow the Philberts to gallop to within 1.5 games with just over a week to go.

Whatever happens with this team, and for the record I continue to believe that they will fall a game or two short as they have almost every year this decade, this team has been fun to watch and is full of heart and passion, leading all of MLB with 47 come from behind wins. And the manager is even on my good side. As my buddy Dave Kay said earlier this week, "have you ever seen a worse manager deserve Manager of the Year?" And you know what....he is right. Jolly Chollie deserves to win Manager of the Year. He has this team close to the playoffs despite a ton of injuries and a double-A quality bullpen. Just a solid job by the manager, and I cannot believe I am going to say this....they have to bring him back in 2008.

Speaking of epic collapses, how about Boston reminding everyone of......BOSTON, in 1978. I think when the Yankees pass the Red Sox and win the division, they should bring back Don Zimmer to scream out "Bucky Fucking Dent". Good times. And where is the Sports Guy, who was last seen gloating over the Yankees/Red Sox situation from May through July straight.

I thought it was pathetic that the Cincinnati Bungles gave up 51 points to the Cleveland Browns last week. And then the Houston Astros went out and hired Ed Wade as their General Manager yesterday, and that decision redefined pathetic. How can there not be a better candidate out there than Ed Wade. This guy never built a team that reached the playoffs during his 7 year tenure at the helm of the Phillies. He dealt away Scott Rolen for nothing. He dealt away Curt Schilling for nothing. He paid Pat Burrell more money than a lineup full of Pat Burrell's deserve, which hamstrung him from signing other talented players for years. He is nothing more than a yes man in a suit who will do what cheap management wants him to. If I were an Astro fan, I would look at this signing as an indication that management (i.e., Drayton McClane) has no commitment to winning and merely wants someone in power that will closely follow instructions.

Donovan McNabb made headlines this week both on and off the field. Off the field, he came out and stirred up the whole Black Quarterback issue again. The Donovan McNabb eras continues to confuse me immensely as a Philadelphia fan. On the field, this guy has been nothing short of sensational since he was drafted with the 2nd pick in the 1999 draft. He has led the team to four NFC Championship games and 1 Super Bowl. He has been a complete package, with great abilities to throw and (until recently) run as well. He has thrived beautifully despite having only a single season in which he had a single receiver who could be considered better than average in his arsenal. Until last season, in my opinion, which I recognize may be in the minority, I believe he had had a better career than Peyton Manning (Manning leapfrogged him last year as McNabb was sidelines and the Colts won it all). Off the field, he has always handled himself with dignity and pride. He has never been in an ounce of trouble. He handled the T.O. fiasco as well as it could be handled. And yet this city has never truly embraced this guy. They booed him at the draft. They bashed him in the offseasons. They wanted A.J. Feeley and later Jeff Garcia to take his job. It is reminiscent of how this town treated Mike Schmidt for the first half of his career before they began to appreciate what they had. McNabb's remarks, in my judgement, are not incorrect or out of line. Race continues to be an issue in our society, and will be for quite some time. It is unfortunate, but it is the truth. His timing could have perhaps been better, but he is right. My concern is that there is a confluence of events (a. the Birds terrible start, b. drafting of Kevin Kolb, c. this race issue, and d. his recent history of injuries) that may work together to spiral out of control and force the end of the McNabb era in Philly before we get to enjoy and appreciate the second half of his career like we did with Schmidtty. That would be too bad. He is better than anything we have had in my lifetime, and I am proud of his character in representing my city. Jason Whitlock, who I find to be an open, honest and great writer, had a strong take on McNabb's words. Whitlock's article can be found here.

I guess it is time for my picks. My overall tally is now 5-16. My confidence has been shattered to the point where I feel like I am Steve Sax trying to throw the ball to first base in the back end of his career. So, you, my loyal reader, now have a decision to make. Are you with me or are you against me? If you believe I will turn this around, climb aboard and let's see if we can't patch this leak. If not, go against me and we can still be friends. For this week.....

NCAA (Last Week: 0-5; Season, 1-9, 10%)

Indiana (+3) vs. Illinois. I know Zook is getting a lot of credit, but Indiana is a live home dig here. This team is athletic, playing well together and in honor of their fallen coach. Hoosiers get 'er done.

UCLA (-6.5) vs. Washington. Washington played well for a half against the Buckeyes but could not hang for a full 60 minutes. I look for more of the same against an angry Bruin squad.

Ga Tech (-3.5) at Virginia. Georgia Tech looked terrible last week and Virginia got a big road win. Which is why this line is not 7 which is where it should be. Easy for Tech here.

Arkansas (-6.5) vs. Kentucky. Letdown for Kentucky as they go from a huge win over a passing team in Louisville and try to contain a great running team in the Razorbacks. Look for Arkansas to handle a much improved Wildcat squad.

Wisconsin (-7) vs. Iowa. The badgers are a good team who played a lackluster half last week. The Hawkeyes are a bad team that lost to another bad team. The Badgers roll at Camp Randall.

NFL (Last week: 2-4; Season, 4-7, 36%)

EAGLES (-6) vs. Detroit. The Birds are 0-2 and have looked positively brutal on offense and special teams. The Lions are 2-0 and have looked good offensively. The Birds secondary is very banged up. And they made the line 6. This tells me Vegas wants to entice you to play Detroit, while the Eagles win big.

San Diego (-5.5) at Green Bay. San Diego struggled offensively against Chicago and New England. I do not care how many media members climb aboard the Packers bandwagon and stroke the defense, but the Packers are not Chicago or New England. San Diego will score 30+, no way Brett Favre can keep up.

Kansas City (-2.5) vs. Minnesota. No team goes 0-16, and Tavaris Jackson on the road is just the right prescription to get those Chiefs a W.

Jets (-3) vs. Miami. Very easy. I am feeling a big week this week.

St. Louis (+3.5) at Tampa. St. Louis will play hard after losing their first two at home, and against a mediocre Tampa team, that is enough to keep it to a field goal or win outright.

NY Giants (+4) at Washington. Washington not as good as record, Giants not as bad. Rivalry game. Take the points.

New Orleans (-4) vs. Tennessee. New Orleans crowd will be fired up for this game much the way they were last year for Monday night against the Falcons. Look for a similar result.

Quick Hitters

Sorry for the quick column this week, but I am on a plane later this morning so no time. Back Wednesday night or Thursday with another post.....
  • Let's start with baseball. The Phillies have been incredible. They just keep holding their collective heads just above waters. They beat the Mets for the 8th straight time yesterday. Despite pulling to within 3.5 games in the division, they are still realistically playing for the Wild Card. The problem is that San Diego evidently may never lose again, so despite sweeping the Mets in New York this weekend, they remain right where they started, 1.5 games out of the Wild Card. They need to stay sharp as they head to Busch Stadium for three against the Cards before a day off Thursday. Every time the Mets scored yesterday, the Phillies responded. This team just has the feel right now. Let's hope it continued and the Pads actually lose a few...
  • This just in, Derek Jeter is the most clutch hitter in baseball. As I stated on 5/17/06, " this guy is my FIRST CHOICE for the Hall of Fame among ALL ACTIVE PLAYERS, including Clemens, Maddux, Johnson, Bonds (only because he cheated), A-Fraud, and Pujols." This guy just comes up with the big play in the big moment all the time. And he is a class act. Great for the game.
  • Onto the gridiron. Did anybody notice that college football's longest losing streak belongs to....Florida International at 15 games. That's right. Duke 20, Northwestern 14. How 'bout them Blue Devils!!! I was actually following play by play on my TREO at 11:00 pm Saturday night as the bend but don't break Duke D had to survive a Northwestern goal to go sequence in the final seconds. That almost overshadowed the fact that I went 0-5 on my college picks.
  • In the NFL, I looked up and Carolina was ahead of Houston 14-0 early and I thought maybe I just really missed the boat and Carolina is actually pretty good this year. And then Houston reeled off 31 straight points and I felt a lot better about things. It looks like Andre wants to battle Chad for "Best Johnson" title this year.
  • I guess cheating was a dumb idea by the Patriots, because clearly they do not need to do it. They are clicking on all cylinders right now. Fortunately for the rest of the league, it is 15 weeks until the playoffs start, so maybe they are peaking too early.
  • Before we go assuming that Ladanian Tomlinson's contract with the devil expired during the offseason, let's remember that his first two weeks, while very sub-par for him, were against the Bears and the Patriots. Next Sunday in Lambeau should give us a better indication.
  • Speaking of Lambeau, I remain firmly committed to the idea that, despite being 2-0, Green Bay is not very good.
  • Speaking of not very good, it appears that there is a bit of a hangover effect going on to the Saints. Who 'dat? One year wonder? Still too early to tell, but they better start playing better in a hurry or the hole will be way too deep. They have a virtual must win next week against a very tough Tennessee Titans squad.
  • I am very interested to see the 41 point per game offense of the Cowpokes as they visit the 12 point per game defense of the Bears next week.
  • The Cleveland Browns, led by Derek Anderson, scored 51 points. I guess, to paraphrase Dennis Green, "the Bengals were NOT who we thought they were."
  • Did that last point not sink in? The Cleveland Browns, led by Derek Anderson, scored 51 points yesterday.
  • Now that Derek Anderson has bought himself some time as the Cleveland starting QB, how about we send Brady Quinn back to Notre Dame for a 5th year of eligibility? They could use him!
  • I am looking forward to the Eagles game tonight, except that I will be watching from a TV on the Redneck Riviera instead of from the Linc. It will tell us a lot about the 2007 Birds. They are in a must play well scenario, and if they do not come out full of intensity and handle a mediocre Redskin team fairly easily at home and at night, then it will say a lot of scary things about this year's club.
