Happy New Year, Phillies Push Continues, Donovan McNabb, Ed Wade, and NCAA and NFL Picks

First of all, to all those celebrating, I wish you a very Happy New Year and an easy fast.

Evidently, the San Diego Padres will never lose another game. Something that all Met and Phillies fans can agree on is that we pretty much despise the Padres at this point. They are even getting some wins from Justin "I Suck" Germano, who has terrible stuff and was cut by the Phils this spring. The Phillies have won 6 of their last 7 (all on the road), and have LOST A GAME in the wild card standings. Just a disgrace. Also, thanks to J. Patrick Lashinsky's Pittsburgh Pirates for leaving early on their extended winter golf vacation and not showing up in their four game sweep at the hands of the Pads. I guess at this point the Phillies best bet is to hope the Mets continue to resemble the 1964 Phillies and complete their collapse. While the Phils have won 6 of 7, the Mets have lost 6 of 7 to allow the Philberts to gallop to within 1.5 games with just over a week to go.

Whatever happens with this team, and for the record I continue to believe that they will fall a game or two short as they have almost every year this decade, this team has been fun to watch and is full of heart and passion, leading all of MLB with 47 come from behind wins. And the manager is even on my good side. As my buddy Dave Kay said earlier this week, "have you ever seen a worse manager deserve Manager of the Year?" And you know what....he is right. Jolly Chollie deserves to win Manager of the Year. He has this team close to the playoffs despite a ton of injuries and a double-A quality bullpen. Just a solid job by the manager, and I cannot believe I am going to say this....they have to bring him back in 2008.

Speaking of epic collapses, how about Boston reminding everyone of......BOSTON, in 1978. I think when the Yankees pass the Red Sox and win the division, they should bring back Don Zimmer to scream out "Bucky Fucking Dent". Good times. And where is the Sports Guy, who was last seen gloating over the Yankees/Red Sox situation from May through July straight.

I thought it was pathetic that the Cincinnati Bungles gave up 51 points to the Cleveland Browns last week. And then the Houston Astros went out and hired Ed Wade as their General Manager yesterday, and that decision redefined pathetic. How can there not be a better candidate out there than Ed Wade. This guy never built a team that reached the playoffs during his 7 year tenure at the helm of the Phillies. He dealt away Scott Rolen for nothing. He dealt away Curt Schilling for nothing. He paid Pat Burrell more money than a lineup full of Pat Burrell's deserve, which hamstrung him from signing other talented players for years. He is nothing more than a yes man in a suit who will do what cheap management wants him to. If I were an Astro fan, I would look at this signing as an indication that management (i.e., Drayton McClane) has no commitment to winning and merely wants someone in power that will closely follow instructions.

Donovan McNabb made headlines this week both on and off the field. Off the field, he came out and stirred up the whole Black Quarterback issue again. The Donovan McNabb eras continues to confuse me immensely as a Philadelphia fan. On the field, this guy has been nothing short of sensational since he was drafted with the 2nd pick in the 1999 draft. He has led the team to four NFC Championship games and 1 Super Bowl. He has been a complete package, with great abilities to throw and (until recently) run as well. He has thrived beautifully despite having only a single season in which he had a single receiver who could be considered better than average in his arsenal. Until last season, in my opinion, which I recognize may be in the minority, I believe he had had a better career than Peyton Manning (Manning leapfrogged him last year as McNabb was sidelines and the Colts won it all). Off the field, he has always handled himself with dignity and pride. He has never been in an ounce of trouble. He handled the T.O. fiasco as well as it could be handled. And yet this city has never truly embraced this guy. They booed him at the draft. They bashed him in the offseasons. They wanted A.J. Feeley and later Jeff Garcia to take his job. It is reminiscent of how this town treated Mike Schmidt for the first half of his career before they began to appreciate what they had. McNabb's remarks, in my judgement, are not incorrect or out of line. Race continues to be an issue in our society, and will be for quite some time. It is unfortunate, but it is the truth. His timing could have perhaps been better, but he is right. My concern is that there is a confluence of events (a. the Birds terrible start, b. drafting of Kevin Kolb, c. this race issue, and d. his recent history of injuries) that may work together to spiral out of control and force the end of the McNabb era in Philly before we get to enjoy and appreciate the second half of his career like we did with Schmidtty. That would be too bad. He is better than anything we have had in my lifetime, and I am proud of his character in representing my city. Jason Whitlock, who I find to be an open, honest and great writer, had a strong take on McNabb's words. Whitlock's article can be found here.

I guess it is time for my picks. My overall tally is now 5-16. My confidence has been shattered to the point where I feel like I am Steve Sax trying to throw the ball to first base in the back end of his career. So, you, my loyal reader, now have a decision to make. Are you with me or are you against me? If you believe I will turn this around, climb aboard and let's see if we can't patch this leak. If not, go against me and we can still be friends. For this week.....

NCAA (Last Week: 0-5; Season, 1-9, 10%)

Indiana (+3) vs. Illinois. I know Zook is getting a lot of credit, but Indiana is a live home dig here. This team is athletic, playing well together and in honor of their fallen coach. Hoosiers get 'er done.

UCLA (-6.5) vs. Washington. Washington played well for a half against the Buckeyes but could not hang for a full 60 minutes. I look for more of the same against an angry Bruin squad.

Ga Tech (-3.5) at Virginia. Georgia Tech looked terrible last week and Virginia got a big road win. Which is why this line is not 7 which is where it should be. Easy for Tech here.

Arkansas (-6.5) vs. Kentucky. Letdown for Kentucky as they go from a huge win over a passing team in Louisville and try to contain a great running team in the Razorbacks. Look for Arkansas to handle a much improved Wildcat squad.

Wisconsin (-7) vs. Iowa. The badgers are a good team who played a lackluster half last week. The Hawkeyes are a bad team that lost to another bad team. The Badgers roll at Camp Randall.

NFL (Last week: 2-4; Season, 4-7, 36%)

EAGLES (-6) vs. Detroit. The Birds are 0-2 and have looked positively brutal on offense and special teams. The Lions are 2-0 and have looked good offensively. The Birds secondary is very banged up. And they made the line 6. This tells me Vegas wants to entice you to play Detroit, while the Eagles win big.

San Diego (-5.5) at Green Bay. San Diego struggled offensively against Chicago and New England. I do not care how many media members climb aboard the Packers bandwagon and stroke the defense, but the Packers are not Chicago or New England. San Diego will score 30+, no way Brett Favre can keep up.

Kansas City (-2.5) vs. Minnesota. No team goes 0-16, and Tavaris Jackson on the road is just the right prescription to get those Chiefs a W.

Jets (-3) vs. Miami. Very easy. I am feeling a big week this week.

St. Louis (+3.5) at Tampa. St. Louis will play hard after losing their first two at home, and against a mediocre Tampa team, that is enough to keep it to a field goal or win outright.

NY Giants (+4) at Washington. Washington not as good as record, Giants not as bad. Rivalry game. Take the points.

New Orleans (-4) vs. Tennessee. New Orleans crowd will be fired up for this game much the way they were last year for Monday night against the Falcons. Look for a similar result.

Dils, being a manager in the Bigs means your team has to be ready to play baseball in April. That's why they have spring training. The fact that the Phils went 11-14 (not to mention a 1-6 start) is now costing them a playoff spot. He lost at least ten other games along the way with bad decisionmaking. I appreciate what the team has done in the last month but with the amount of talent here, this team should be well ahead of the Mets and not 1.5 out. Davey Lopes in '08!

Good point on the Phils.
Ryan Howard is three from the record. I expect an announcement as soon as he does #196. An incredible frat---for a so-called "MVP candidate." Just 135 games! The percentages are mind-boggling.

Go Pads!

Ari,

Enough with your Ryan Howard bashing. I have heard it ad nauseum for the last year. STOP! We get that you don't like the guy. We also get that he strikes out too much. And you know what.....every general manager in baseball would trade him and his $900,000 salary and four more years until free agency straight up for any player in baseball. Anyone. So let up on Ryan Howard, and if ESPN sucks so bad, stop watching it. And by the way, every Phillies fan I know or have heard about is pushing J-Roll for MVP, not Ryan Howard.

And Grossy, I believe baseball people that are a lot more knowledgeable than you or me would tell you that the best of managers may win 5 games a year for his team while the worst may cost his team five games a year. So enough with Chollie costing them 10 additional games. You know I am not a Chollie apologist, but he has not cost this team double digit wins...

I like Howard a lot. I don't like how the media (not just ESPN) salivates over a .260 hitter with 210 Ks. It was one thing to rob Pujols of the MVP last year, but another to act as though he's one of the best in baseball...when, as this year has shown since the pitchers figured him out, he's clearly a 28 yr old who'll be a .260 hitter for his career, strike out 150-200 times per year and maybe hit 400 HRs for his career---far fewer than many other guys will or already have that get far less pub. Is anyone mentioning Dunn, Cabrera, Holliday, Fielder o Pujols might hit 600 HRs?

I did not mention ESPN.

As for J-Roll, please. Fielder or Holliday is the MVP. And Howard won it last year without his team making it to October, so the argument that Prince or Matt cannot win if those teams dont make the playoffs is hypocritical.

Last time I emailed you back, Dils, on Howard (a lengthy email with fact after fact, you did not respond). I know you're busy like I am, so email me back if you'd like when you have time.

I won't comment any longer. Had not in months anyway as, by your words, I see free speech is unwelcome and that this blog will be moving into more and more football as the weeks go by, which is of no interest to me or most of my friends---esp not in Sept or October. Nov-Jan is bad enough when there's great college hoops beginning.

AJK - as you & I have discussed, MVP is SUBJECTIVE - it is like gymnastics, it is voted upon. I know it irks you that the Media overrates Howard, as it does me.

HR is an overrated stat - RBIs, OBP, & Runs are more important. But the fact remains, 200 Ks or not, Howard has driven in 125 runs. Now you & I know it should be more because he leaves lots of guys stranded & does not move runners over.

Yes - I believe he is overrated. But your constant harping on it makes it appear as if you have a personal vendatta against him - which I know you do not.

And Dils is correct - getting 125 RBIs out of a $900K player is mighty tough to beat.

Lets please end this and enjoy the final 8 days of the season.

Fair enough. I'm sure he'll get a new contract too, as do most 3rd-4th yr playes who "produce."
And I'd guess Howard has MORE men on base when he comes up than nearly anyone in MLB, sans perhaps Aaron Rowand & Hideki Matsui.

Ok, I'm done. Enjoy the final week and the best month in sports (and life---fall foliage! Oh, not in So Cal. LOL)

IT RAINED IN NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY INLAND TODAY!! Talk about the Media being ridiculous - the coverage for 3 days was akin to bracing us for the storm of the century! It rained for 1 hour

Ari:

* First, Howard is 27, not 28. get your facts straight

* Yes, he struck out 4 times tonight. And on his 5th at bat, he hit a GAME WINNING RBI single to left center. I think we'll keep him

* I am still waiting for you to tell me, if you were a GM of the PHILLIES, who you would trade for him straight up. Any name will do?

* Holiday is going to hit 600 HRs while Howard will "maybe hit 400?" Again, check your facts. They are the same age (both 27) and Howard has 21 more home runs than Holiday despite less major league service time.

* I will tell you what. Since Howard will maybe hit 400 home runs according to you, I will be generous and set the over/under at 425. Now you name the figure you want to bet and I will take the over. Either take the bet or don't make ridiculous statements.

* As for Jimmy Rollins winning the MVP, how can you say he does not deserve it? First of all, he should win the gold glove for his defense and if you a) disagree or b) don't think that matters, you are flat out wrong. As for his offense, he is hitting .294, leads the league with 132 runs scored, 38 doubles, 18 triples, 29 jacks, 90 RBIs as a freaking leadoff man in the national league, and 37 steals in 43 attempts. Oh, and he is the bonafide leader of this club that is fighting against all odds to make the playoffs. He is the only MVP candidate on this team that has stayed healthy all year and they would not be within 10 games of the playoffs without him.

* As for Adam Dunn, he is not very good. It is embarrassing as a Phillie fan that Ryan Howard has had a bad year for him, spent a stint on the DL and only has 19 more RBI than Dunn.

* As for whatever you are talking about with free speech on my blog, well, I have no earthly idea what you are talking about. And how have I not had enough baseball chatter for you? I have been talking about baseball early and often for the past 7 weeks since I reactivated. And yes I will talk about football, because despite you, other people do care (in fact, if you have not checked lately, despite your clear opinions, football is the most popular sport in this country, BY FAR).

* Maybe if Dunn or Cabrera played on a team that can be within 20 games of .500 they would get some pub. As I recall, Cabrera got quite a bit when Florida was winning World Series before they firesold their whole franchise.

* And stop saying you like Howard a lot. You have been bashing the guy who makes less than $7,500 per RBI for months straight. And again, if you hate ESPN so much, stop watching it every single day.

actually, Matsui has been up at leats 52 times with nobody on as he bats behind A-Rod.

Speaking of which, how about Gehrig driving in 184 runs in 1931 hitting behind Ruth - and Ruth hit 46 HRs

We can continue the Howard discussion over private email. You should be pleased I am discussing YOUR team and YOUR players. I do know it's YOUR blog, but let's chat some Pads or Indians sometime.

Howard will be 28 by the end of the postseason. Ok, Cabrera, Pujols et al are much younger and have MORE HRs than Ryan. I'm talking about how AP writers forget that when talking about Howard's future.

FOUR strikeouts is unheard of. Ok, so he singled in the 10th. He also left runners on EACH time he was up earlier, I think. When you have a million runners on base each time, as Stitz said, damn right you should have 150 RBI.

You still don't admit the media overrated him, as anyone, including Stitz can see.

And no, I would not want him on my team. Injury prone, slow, poor defensively, whiffs 200 times per year and then hits 45 HRs. It's the same reason I dislike players of my teams like Mike Cameron and Khalil Greene, as most Pad fans do. Heck, I think Sizemore is overrated. He is a leadoff guy who hits 270 with 160 Ks. That's just me, always will be. What really differentiates Howard from Pat Burrell this year when all is considered.

I know what you're saying about Ryan, but you're biased as he's on your team. Try to take the bias out of your argument as I do when I talk about Cleveland or SD. It's really hard to take someone seriously who does not think he's overrated (by the media).

Your comments about the Marlins "firesale" are ridiculous and reak of big market bias and that "not everyone can compete" balderdash that Stitz and I hate hearing from socialists---not that you are a socialist, obviously.

I do like Howard. I just dislike what the media has done to him. I'm not only talking about ESPN, and since they don't televise baseball any longer, I'm really not talking about that pitiful network.

I know of at leats two VERY intelligent baseball fans who believe Howard will be out of baseball within 3-5 years as this year is just the beginning of his downfall as pitchers figure him out. So I could be worse.

Lastly, I ignore your salary comments, because they're irrelevant. All players who step up early in their careers are underpaid until they sign their big contract.

No thanks to the bet. I don't need money on the line (or fantasy sports) to enjoy baseball.

others are taking notice, esp of the AP writer who though Ryan could hit 500 HRs at a younger age than A-rod

that's what happens when you have affirmative action! (janie mccauley)
